Algebra I Recipe: Writing Equations in y = mx + b when Given the Slope and a Point on the Line

By G Redden

Steps
  1. Use point-slope form: y - k = m(x - h)
  2. Substitute the slope in place of "m."
  3. Substitue the x-coordinate of the ordered pair for "h."
  4. Substitute the y-corrdinate of the ordered pair for "k."
  5. Distribute the slope value.
  6. Add or substract "k" on both sides to isolate "y" and get y = mx + b.

(2, 3) m = -1/2

(-3, 4) m = 2/3

(2, -3) m = 2

(1, -3) m = -4

(-2, 4) m = 0
