Algebra I Recipe: Solving Absolute Value Equations

By G Redden

Steps
  1. Isolate the absolute value using inverse operations.
  2. Write a compound sentence with "OR".
    • Sentence 1 – is the expression inside the absolute value set equal to the value of the right side.
    • Sentence 2 – is the expression inside the absolute value set equal to the opposite of the right side.
  3. Solve each sentence (equation) for the variable.
  4. Check your solutions where the absolute value is isolated.
    • The answer is the number(s) that make true statements when checked.
1.
| 2x - 7 | - 5 = 4
2.
6 - 5| x - 1 | = 1
3.
-2| x + 2 | = 4
