Algebra I Recipe: Dividing Polynomials
By G Redden
- Set up long division.
- If the dividend or divisor has missing terms, insert that term with a coefficient of zero.
- Divide the first term of the divisor into the first term of the dividend.
- Put the answer from #3 above its like term in the dividend.
- Multiply down.
- Subtract, bring down the next term, and repeat steps 3-6.
- If there is a remainder, put the remainder over the divisor and add it to the quotient.
1.
(x3 + 2x2 - 6x – 9) ÷ (x + 3)
2.
(x3 + 2x2 - 6x – 9) ÷ (x – 2)
3.
(2x4 + 3x3 + 5x – 1) ÷ (x2 - 2x + 2)
