Algebra I Recipe: Graphing Linear Inequalities with Two Variables

By G Redden

Steps
  1. Solve the inequality for "y".
  2. Determine the slope and y-intercept.
  3. Graph the y-intercept.
  4. Use the slope (rise/run) to graph more points.
  5. Connect the points.
    • With a solid boundary line, if you have ≥, ≤ after solving for "y".
    • With a broken boundary line, if you have >, < after solving for "y".
  6. Shade the graph.
    • Above the boundary line, if you have >, ≥ after solving for "y".
    • Below the boundary line, if you have <, ≤ after solving for "y".
  7. The answers are in the shaded area and on the solid line, if there is one.
1.
y ≤ 6
2.
2x - 3y < 4
3.
6x + 5y < 30
4.
y - (2/3)x ≥ -2
