Velocity

Subject undefined

Pronunciation: ve•LOC•i•ty

Definition

the time-rate at which a body changes its position; defined as displacement divided by the time of travel

Example

Suppose upon returning home at the end of a road trip the odometer recorded a total of 2,250 miles had been traveled. If the trip took a total of 36 hours, then the car's average velocity during the vacation would have been 0 miles / 36 hours or 0 mph. This differs from average speed in that average velocity is defined as net displacement divided by total time not total distance divided by total time. Since you returned to your starting point, your final change in position, or net displacement, was 0 miles.
